Get involved in the #ThenandNow campaign in support of the Dementia Research Institute

17 August 2016

Since October 2015, UCL has partnered with 9 major retailers including Iceland, Asda, Waitrose and Morrisons, who between them, have pledged millions of pounds raised from the carrier bag levy to the UCL Dementia Research Institute.

The institute, set to be redeveloped at the heart of the Bloomsbury Campus will be at the forefront of national and international efforts to find effective treatment and improve the lives of those living with dementia. To raise awareness of the campaign, @UCLalumni are launching a #ThenandNow digital campaign on the 30 August and they would like you to take part.

Dementia can affect anyone; there are currently 850,000 people living with the disease in the UK and this is set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. Dementia costs the economy £26billion a year, far more than cancer and heart disease combined yet seven times more money is spent on cancer research than dementia research. Without effective treatment, almost half of the children born in 2015 can expect to experience progressive cognitive decline or dementia in their later years.

To highlight the importance of the new institute and of dementia research, UCL is launching the #ThenandNow campaign across its social media channels on the 30 August.

Tweet us @UCLalumni and share a photo from your past alongside a new photo to remind people that memories will be lost if we do not invest in research for treatment and ultimately, a cure for dementia.
