Heather Payne

I graduated from SOAS with a BA in Linguistics, and completed an MSc in Neuroscience, Language and Communication at UCL in 2010. I have now completed the first MRes year in Speech, Language and Cognition as part of an ESRC/DCAL Ph.D studentship under the supervision of Dr. Mairead MacSweeney and Prof. Bencie Woll.

During my Ph.D I will investigate lateralisation of language processing using functional Transcranial Doppler Sonogrophy (fTCD – a non-invasive measure of blood flow velocity in the main arteries supplying the brain). I aim to validate the use of fTCD with children born profoundly deaf by developing suitable tasks to assess both signed and spoken language processing. I will also explore how these measures relate to literacy and phonological awareness in younger deaf children. I hope that the research will allow me to explore the biological and experiential factors involved in language development in two modalities.
