Dr Chloe Marshall

I am Senior Lecturer in Psychology and Human Development at the Institute of Education, University of London:
- Language and literacy development
- Developmental disorders of language, speech and literacy (Specific Language Impairment (SLI), dyslexia, stuttering)
- Phonology and its developmental relationship to morphology, syntax and the lexicon
- The cognitive skills underlying typical and atypical language/literacy acquisition in hearing and deaf children
- The phonology of English and British Sign Language (BSL)
For the last few years I have been collaborating with Gary Morgan, Wolfgang Mann and other colleagues at DCAL. Our work investigates phonological complexity and phonological short term memory in deaf children learning BSL. We have developed a non-sign repetition test, which is currently being used as part of a battery of BSL tests designed to investigate language impairments in Deaf children who are acquiring BSL as their first language. This is the first project of its kind in the world. I am part-funded by an Early Career Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust, which enables me to study working memory abilities in Deaf signing children with and without language impairments. This project promises to shed exciting light on the underlying nature of SLI, since any model of language impairment has to account for not only cross-linguistic data, but also for cross-modal data.
