I am a post-doctoral research associate at DCAL working with Dr. Kearsy Cormier and Prof. Bencie Woll. I am interested in how people use language in everyday social interaction. I currently investigate the role of visual-gestural modality in achieving mutual understanding in both signed and spoken conversation. This cross-linguistic and cross-cultural study will include Lengua de Señas Argentina (Argentine Sign Language, LSA), British Sign Language (BSL) and Argentine spoken Spanish. The aim of comparing LSA to Argentine spoken Spanish is to control socio-cultural differences helping to identify and distinguish shared idiosyncratic gestures from gestures and signs exclusively used by LSA signers. This project is funded by a Rubicon postdoctoral grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for two years.
I completed a master's degree and PhD at Radboud University and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics Nijmegen, The Netherlands, supervised by Prof. Nick Enfield, Prof. Steve Levinson, Dr. Simeon Floyd, and Dr. Onno Crasborn. My PhD research focused on how LSA signers manage to deal with problems of understanding (other-initiated repair) in naturally occurring conversation. Prior to that, I completed my undergraduate studies in Linguistics (Licenciatura en Letras) from the Buenos Aires University (UBA) in 2007, and from 2007 to 2009 worked for two years as an Associate Linguist and Corpus Manager in the 'Laboratory of Documentation and Research in Linguistics and Anthropology' at the Argentine Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET), Buenos Aires, Argentina.
