Start: Nov 11, 2014 2:00:00 PM

What is required to increase the accessibility of large-scale, standardized assessments for students who are deaf or hard of hearing? How can these strategies also address equity issues within the assessment process? This presentation gives an overview of key concepts in accessible assessments, including access vs. target skills and accommodations vs. modifications in test development. I will then discuss the results of a recent study that investigated potential differential effects of item modifications on test performance for four groups of students: (a) students who are deaf or hard of hearing; (b) students with learning disabilities; (c) students who are English Language Learners, and (d) students with typical English language development and without disabilities. This presentation closes with some suggested next steps accessibility research, including the move towards computer-based assessments with embedded accommodations and the translation of research into meaningful policy and effective practice.
