John Oliver Hobbes Memorial Scholarship in Modern English Literature
Founded in 1909 in memory of John Oliver Hobbes (Mrs Craigie), a former student of the College
- The Scholarship to the value of £300 + £175 (Departmental
Discretion), known
as the John Oliver Hobbes Memorial Scholarship, may be awarded in each
session
to the field of Modern English Literature.
- The Scholarship is awarded by the Council on the recommendation of
the
Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
- The Scholarship is open to undergraduate students in the Department
of
English Language and Literature who are in the second or third years of
their
course in the session in which the award is made.
- Candidates are required to write an essay on a subject of their own
choosing
within the field of Modern English Literature, the subject in each case
to be
approved by the Quain Professor of English Language and Literature and
the Lord
Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature. Candidates must pay
special
regard to composition and literary style.
- Candidates must send their essays to the Tutor in the Department of
English
Language and Literature by the end of the first week of the Summer term
of the
session.
- The examiners for the Scholarship are the Quain Professor of English
Language and Literature and the Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern
English
Literature, or one of these acting with one other person appointed by
the
Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
- The award is announced in July.
- Awards are subject to the provisions of the General Regulations.
