Examination Entry [EngD]
PROCEDURE FOR VIVA EXAMINATION FOR ENG.D. CANDIDATES
The procedures for the examination of EngD programmes differ from those of the MPhil and PhD degrees as they include taught elements. Where departments are unsure of the correct procedure, they are asked to contact the Research Degrees Officer in the first instance.
Programme specific regulations are published in the Academic Regulations for Students [Blue Book] and in the Departmental Handbook for the relevant EngD.
Appointing the examiners
The procedures and guidelines for appointment of examiners for the research component of the EngD are the same as those outlined for MPhil and PhD candidates. EngD Examiner Nomination forms may be obtained from the Research Degrees Officer or downloaded from the UCL Registry web pages. The completed form should be submitted by the UCL Supervisor to the Research Degrees Officer, together with a description of thesis, a minimum of 4 to 6 months in advance of the viva. A viva date should not be set until the Supervisor has received confirmation of the official appointment of examiners from the Registry.
Examination entry form
An examination entry form should be completed by the candidate before the Examiner Nomination Form is submitted. These forms should be downloaded from the Registry web pages and returned to Student Records approximately 4 months in advance of thesis submission.
Deposit of thesis
A thesis which is accepted by the College for the award of the EngD is placed in the UCL Library. The copyright of the thesis is retained by the author. Candidates are required to submit an Abstract of Thesis Form together with the relevant Library deposit forms to Student Records with the final copies of the thesis.
Submission of thesis for examination
EngD candidates should submit two soft bound copies of the thesis in accordance with UCL's guidance on format and binding published on the website. In the first instance you should submit two soft-bound copies of your thesis to the Student Centre at the front of the Chadwick Building.
Departments should allow sufficient time for the examiners to read the thesis between the time of appointment and the date of examination.
Examination
Departments should notify researchdegrees@ucl.ac.uk of the
date of the viva for the EngD research component.
Confirmation of examiners' appointment, together with blank copies of the relevant forms will be sent once their appointment is confirmed.
After the examination
Thesis submission
Candidates should submit the final version of
their thesis, once any amendments required by the examiners have been approved,
to Student Records, in accordance with UCL research degree
guidelines.
Examiner reports
The
examiners will send their separate preliminary
reports together with the Joint Examiners Report* and expenses claims
form to the Research Degree Officers, Student Records, who will arrange
payment of fees and expenses.
NB: A single Joint Report has now replaced the individual Joint and Summary Reports.
Notification of results
Once Student Records have received confirmation that the corrections (if required) have been completed and the final version of the thesis (together with the relevant forms) have been submitted, they will obtain confirmation from the Examinations Section that the taught programme elements have been passed. It is at this stage that confirmation of your award will be given.
Please refer to the page entitled thesis binding and submission regarding submitting the final copy of your thesis. The electronic version should be submitted directly to UCL Library Services.
