In any collaboration the people are the key to success. This applies to all concerned, teachers, students, technical assistants, managers. They need to be enthusiastic, and competent. This is the basis of the recruitment of participants. But these qualities are not enough on their own. Motivation; incentive/rewards. What s in it for each of the different participants ? Teachers; given the work overload of typical secondary school teacher any new demands need to promise dividends in terms of job satisfaction, pupil achievement, brownie points for impressing authority, career advancement and self satisfaction. Hence specialist schools because you re more likely to find enthusiasts there it s in their remit to develop new pedagogies. Pupils; need to be convinced of the improvement in achievement in relation to exams/pleasure/variety/social contacts. Mutual aims Why do this? Examples relating to CROSSCALL Clarity of procedures. What to do and how do it? Focus and simplify (e.g. on providing support in preparation for oral exams) Organisation Needs to be quite tight. Particularly given the time/distance/institution matrix Jane mentioned earlier. People need to see achievable small objectives. Small units will work better than large ones; Eg our original intention was one site for languages. Now we havethre, one for each language. Small teams/units of people each with its leader will work better than large ones. An attempt to overcome the distance factor. The problem of communicating with three sets of students in three different HE departments with three different teachers who may not be their teachers anyway. The second lesson concerns the use of the technology.
