Professor Tony Wright

Introduction

Tony Wright joined UCL as Visiting Professor of Government and Public Policy after retiring from the House of Commons at the 2010 general election.

As a Member of Parliament he chaired the Select Committee on Public Administration for over a decade. He also chaired the Select Committee on Reform of the House of Commons - referred to as the 'Wright Committee' - which secured major reforms to the way in which the Commons works, in the wake of the parliamentary expenses scandal.

Before entering the Commons in 1992, Tony taught at the University of Birmingham where he was Reader in British Political Thought.

As author or editor, he has published over twenty books, including the best-selling British Politics: A Very Short Introduction. He is joint editor of The Political Quarterly. In 2009 the Political Studies Association gave him the Parliamentarian of the Year award.

In addition to his appointment at UCL, Tony is Professorial Fellow in Politics at Birkbeck; and sits on the Advisory Board of the Parliamentary Ombudsman.
