Community Web Site Launch
The Computational Biology web site was formally launched on the 14th February 2012, with a presentation by Professor Janet Thornton, Director of the European Bioinformatics Institute, the slides of which can be viewed by clicking on the image below.
Professor Janet Thornton
Professor Thornton, CBE, FRS is Director of the European Bioinformatics Institute on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge. She is one of the world’s leading researchers in structural bioinformatics, using computational methods to understand protein structure and function. Her work is highly interdisciplinary, interfacing with structural biology, bioinformatics, biological chemistry and chemoinformatics, amongst others. Together with Professor Christine Orengo, she introduced the CATH classification of protein structure.
European Bioinformatics Institute
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is an academic research institute located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Its mission is to provide freely available data and bioinformatics services to all facets of the scientific community in ways that promote scientific progress, to contribute to the advancement of biology through basic investigator-driven research in bioinformatics, to provide advanced bioinformatics training to scientists at all levels, from PhD students to independent investigators and to help disseminate cutting-edge technologies to industry.
