CoMPLEX Fellowship Report - Andrew Rider

Location of Visit:

Communication Science Laboratories. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT). 3-1, Morinosato-Wakamiya, Atsugi-shi. Japan.

Purpose of Visit

Dr Shin’ya Nishida has a proven track record of international research collaborations, including several studies with my supervisor, Professor Alan Johnston. His work covers a number of aspects of human vision and in particular his research into motion integration has had a big influence on my own studies. It was a great opportunity to work with him in Japan, exploring some of the mathematical aspects of visual motion and looking at how the visual system pools information across space to generate our perceptions of translating or rotating motion. NTT has a large research facility just outside Tokyo where, as well as researching futuristic telecommunication technologies, they have a world renowned lab conducting research into understanding human sensory perception.
