Study abroad
Who can apply?
Any CoMPLEX student in the second or third year of their PhD studies.

Purpose
To allow CoMPLEX students to work at a research centre outside the UK, to enrich their research experience and help develop their scientific career. Visits to any international University or Research Centre are acceptable. Visits can be used for any laboratory, theoretical or field-based research of between one and three months.

What support is available to any individual applicant?
Fellowship support will cover student stipend and travel costs during the time abroad. The student will take study leave for the period of the Fellowship. Effectively this extends the period of their PhD by the time taken on study leave. CoMPLEX will extend stipend support by this amount. Students are strongly encouraged to also seek funds from other sources for travel abroad. The Graduate School strongly supports international study and provides guidance on study leave and funding sources:

The next deadline for applications is to be announced. Visits should occur anytime during the year of applying. Normally two deadlines will be set in each year. Selection criteria
1) The potential for the proposed work to benefit the applicant’s research and intellectual development.
2) The quality of the applicant.
3) The potential for the proposed work to generate novel research with high impact.
4) The case that the research could not be achieved within UCL.
How are decisions made?
A committee appointed by the director of CoMPLEX makes final decisions based on both the selection criteria and the availability of funds.
Conditions of the award
Original receipts/invoices for all major items of expenditure (travel, accommodation etc.) must be provided by Fellows, and sent to the CoMPLEX Administrator, on their return. Fellowships are not available for travel to scientific meetings or to give talks. The Fellowship does not cover the cost of consumables.
After the award
On return to UCL, the Fellow will be required to provide a short report for posting on the CoMPLEX web site outlining the purpose of the visit, the research undertaken and their experience of visiting another University.
