id2 Conference and CoMPLEX's Annual Conference 2013

The first Inter-Disciplinary Inter-Doctoral-Training-Centre (id²) Conference took place May 16th-17th at UCL. It brought together almost 100 postgraduate students from 7 different doctoral training centres and PhD programmes (including overseas delegates) with a shared interest in applying quantitative tools and modelling techniques to problems in the life sciences. This was the first of a rotating, annual conference scheme, creating a network of students across interdisciplinary DTCs in the UK and abroad.

The two-day conference was hosted and funded by UCL CoMPLEX. The first day consisted of student talks, held in parallel sessions, and poster presentations. In addition, we invited a panel of current and former students from the participating DTCs to a student forum to discuss the content and structure of DTC programmes. The suggested issues and improvements were then debated and voted on with feedback provided to all CDT directors.

This year, the CoMPLEX Annual Conference was held in conjunction with the id2 Conference and we were pleased to welcome CoMPLEX affiliates on the second day to a programme of plenary lectures. We had an exceptional line-up of speakers: Professor Daniel Wolpert FRS, Professor Clare Elwell, Mark Henderson (Head of Communications at the Wellcome Trust and author of The Geek Manifesto), Professor Darren Wilkinson and Professor Jim Smith FRS, Research Director of the Francis Crick Institute. We are very grateful to each of them for taking the time to join us.
