Research Summary
Dr. Tan's research exploits computational, experimental and theoretical methods to characterise the structural and functional performance of engineering materials and structures; particularly, in their response to extreme loadings caused by blast and projectile/fragment impact. His research spans several areas, primarily in solid or cellular materials and structures, which can be broadly classified as follows:
Viscoplastic constitutive theory for brittle to ductile damage in polycrystalline materials under dynamic loading
On the dynamic mechanical properties of open-cell metal foams - A re-assessment of the 'simple-shock theory'
Dynamic crushing of honeycombs and features of shock fronts

Biography
Dr. Tan obtained his first degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. This was followed by graduate research work undertaken at UMIST/The University of Manchester, culminating in the award of a PhD in Applied Mechanics. He has worked as a research assistant and post-doctoral fellow at The University of Manchester and, very briefly, at the University of Aberdeen before joining UCL as lecturer in September 2007. He heads a high-strain rate laboratory (HSRL) and leads an active research group working in various aspects of materials modelling and dynamic structural mechanics.
