Research Summary

Dr. Tan's research exploits computational, experimental and theoretical methods to characterise the structural and functional performance of engineering materials and structures; particularly, in their response to extreme loadings caused by blast and projectile/fragment impact. His research spans several areas, primarily in solid or cellular materials and structures, which can be broadly classified as follows:

- Cellular materials; their microstructure and mechanical properties
- Light weight structures
- Engineering for structural resilience and robustness to extreme loadings
- Impact dynamics and energy absorption
- Materials characterisation; constitutive modelling and high-strain rate response.
- Fluid structure interaction

Academic Background

  • Award Year
  • 2006
    Doctor of Philosophy
    University of Manchester

Dr. Tan obtained his first degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. This was followed by graduate research work undertaken at UMIST/The University of Manchester, culminating in the award of a PhD in Applied Mechanics. He has worked as a research assistant and post-doctoral fellow at The University of Manchester and, very briefly, at the University of Aberdeen before joining UCL as lecturer in September 2007. He heads a high-strain rate laboratory (HSRL) and leads an active research group working in various aspects of materials modelling and dynamic structural mechanics.
