CMMP Group - PhD Opportunities

Details on PhD opportunities within the condensed matter and materials physics (CMMP) group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and guidance on how to apply.

PhD student in a laboratory

The CMMP group at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, UCL, offers one of the most dynamic and diverse environments in the UK for graduate studies in condensed matter physics. Our research encompasses a vast array of subjects, from quantum computing, organic electronics, and superconductivity to the physics of the Earth's deep interior, biomagnetism, and nanoscale imaging. For more information, please explore our list of research topics.

Given our broad range of research interests, we offer PhD projects that cater to a multitude of academic preferences. Whether you're inclined towards addressing fundamental problems in condensed matter physics or interested in the development of future technologies, the CMMP group provides a nurturing and collaborative atmosphere to foster your growth. Each year, we welcome approximately 12 new PhD students, supported by various funding avenues that you can learn about via the links below.

Engaging with Potential Supervisors:
For prospective students, establishing a dialogue with potential supervisors in the CMMP group is of paramount importance. Such interactions foster a shared understanding of research aspirations and aid in matching the ideal projects for each applicant. It is essential that you contact your potential supervisor(s) for these discussions prior to application submission. You can find contact information in our directory of potential academic supervisors.
