UCL's Online Intermediate Dutch Language Courses
Enrolment is now open for the following start dates: 25th June, 16th July and 3rd September 2018. Note that courses running in July and August may take students 3 to 4 weeks longer to complete due to the tutors' annual leave.
Are you interested in studying Dutch on an intermediate level? University College London offers Intermediate Dutch 1 and 2, two tutor-supported online courses for intermediate learners of Dutch (Dutch / Flemish at level B as defined by the Council of Europe). The courses are available to learners worldwide, are taught online on a one-to-one basis, i.e. every student is taught individually by his or her personal tutor via Skype, and can be adapted to meet learners' individual needs. Also, you decide whether your private online teaching sessions or classes via Skype take place in the day time or the evening - for every Skype class, you agree with your tutor on a day and time that suits both you and your tutor.
Intermediate Dutch 1 is ideal for students who
have successfully completed the online course Beginners 2 or who
have reached a similar linguistic standard, equivalent to level A2 as
defined by the Council of Europe. Intermediate Dutch 2 is both for students who have successfully completed Intermediate 1 or who have a linguistic standard comparable to level B1. After successful completion of the Intermediate courses, you reach the required level (B2 CEFR) to take the Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal (NT2 Staatexamen, i.e. exams organised by Dutch and/or Belgian government) and the CNaVT exams Profiel Educatief Startbekwaam and Professionele Taalvaardigheid.
course runs over a 12-weeks study period, although this period can be slightly extended depending on your schedule. Note that you can sign up for the courses individually or for a package including both Intermediate Dutch 1 and 2 (24 study weeks). Students on a tighter schedule can opt for the intensive versions of the courses (6 study weeks).
Once your registration is complete, your personal teacher contacts you and you receive an individual log-in and password for access to the downloadable online course materials. After you complete the course, you continue to have access to all the course materials. At the bottom of this page you find links to register and pay for the courses.
Intermediate Dutch 1 and 2 are built around a series of thematic chapters. You work three weeks on each chapter. All lessons have a different theme, ranging from science and education, to transport. Each chapter includes reading and listening texts, with grammatical and other commentary. All text and audio material is authentic. The online activities are designed to develop the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. All written exercises and tasks are corrected by your personal tutor. A key feature of the courses are the video teaching sessions between you and your individual teacher. They allow you to further develop your listening and speaking skills via Skype. For Intermediate 1 you participate in an introductory session via Skype and eight individual teaching session of 60 minutes each. Also for Intermediate 2 you take part in eight individual teaching sessions of 60 minutes. All our tutors are native speakers of Dutch and/or Flemish with a PhD or MA degree in Dutch language and literature. Click here to get to know our teaching staff.
The course is further linked to the UCL online reference grammar of Dutch, which
provides additional self-access exercise materials. A weekly conversation group via Skype gives you further opportunity to practise your speaking skills with other intermediate students and your tutor.
