Hogelands Intermediate Dutch Language Courses
Next start dates: 7th of September, 21st of September, 5th of October, 19th of October and 2nd of November 2015. You can sign up until two days before the start dates.
Hogelands 1 and Hogelands 2
are tutor-supported online courses for intermediate learners of Dutch (level B as defined by the Council of Europe). Each
course runs over a 12-weeks study period. Hogelands 1 is ideal for students who
have successfully completed Lagelands 2 or who
have reached a similar linguistic standard, equivalent to level A2 as
defined by the Council of Europe. Hogelands 2 builds on the skills you learn
in Hogelands 1 and is both for students who have successfully completed
Hogelands 1 or who have a linguistic standard comparable to level B1. The courses are available to students worldwide, are taught on a one-to-one basis (i.e. one teacher per
student) and can be tailored to students' individual needs. Also, you decide whether your private online teaching sessions or classes via Skype take place in the day
time or the evening - for every Skype class, you agree with your tutor on a day and time that suits both you and your tutor.
Note that you can sign up for the courses individually or for a package including both Hogelands 1 and 2 (24 study weeks). Once your registration is complete, your personal teacher contacts you and you receive an individual log-in and password for access to the online courses. At the bottom of this page you find links to register and pay for the Hogelands courses.
Hogelands 1 and 2 are built around a series of thematic chapters. You work three weeks on each chapter. All lessons have a different theme, ranging from science and education, to transport. Each chapter includes reading and listening texts, with grammatical and other commentary. All text and audio material is authentic. The online activities are designed to develop the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. For all written exercises and tasks you receive written feedback from your tutor. A key feature of the courses are the weekly video teaching sessions via Skype between you and your teacher. They allow you to practise your listening and speaking skills and to interact directly with your individual tutor. Every Skype class lasts 60 minutes. All our tutors are native speakers of Dutch and have a PhD degree (doctorate) in Dutch language and literature.
The course is further linked to the UCL online reference grammar of Dutch, which provides additional self-access exercise materials. Click here to view the Hogelands Intermediate Dutch Study Guide. If you have any further queries about the course content, email Dr An (email@example.com).
At the end of the
courses you will have:
- an intermediate level of proficiency in Dutch (B1 for Hogelands 1 and B2 for Hogelands 2): you will be able to communicate both orally and written in a wide range of contexts and situations; to express your opinions; to report what other people have said; to make structured notes; and to write different types of text.
- insight into language structure and good self-study skills
You need internet access and a computer and webcam. The course includes live sessions using Skype.
The only printed book you need is a translating dictionary (Dutch/English, English/Dutch).
The courses are delivered by means of an online learning environment and include frequent (individual) teaching sessions via Skype. All speaking and listening practice you do live with your tutor via Skype.
Note that the Skype sessions do not take place at a set time. You decide with your tutor for each individual call on a day and time that suits you both. Note however that once the Skype session has been arranged, calls need to be cancelled and postponed no later than 24 hours before the call is due to take place. If you don't cancel the call in time, it will be assumed to have taken place. If you decide to have the session at a new date, you need to pay an extra charge via the Online Store of UCL.
