Evening Courses
Founded in 1991, the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) offers courses taught to the highest standard by qualified and experienced native speakers who are also able to advise participants on language learning objectives.
The CLIE offers a wide range of language courses which form part of the adult learning programme and are opened to all participants. Courses include Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Kazakh, Latin, Mandarin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Welsh.
Course Information
The Evening Course Programme is designed to teach participants how to communicate effectively in a foreign language. Whether for professional or personal reasons, an Evening Course can provide the means to achieve fluency in a chosen language. All four skills are taught - reading, writing, listening and speaking* - with particular emphasis on oral communication. Courses cover the language as it is spoken today in everyday situations, from basic survival skills at beginner's level through to fluent communication at advanced levels. Formal and informal registers are taught using contemporary and cultural references of the chosen country.
Class size is an important factor in language learning and is limited to 12 participants in order to maximise student talking time. The communicative teaching methods and small group size encourage participants to make rapid progress through active class participation.
The Evening Courses Programme attracts both academics and professionals creating a dynamic and interesting learning environment.

*The ratio of the four skills will vary depending on the language taken.
