UCL Living Latin Society Colloquium

19 October 2018

[image reference is broken] 23rd October, 6-7pm in Gordon House G09 SALVETE OMNES! Pedantry and scholarship: a perennial debate.

An eighteenth-century Latin professor, David Ruhnkenius, makes a brilliant oration targeting pedantic humanities teachers who 'love to stay in the shade', while expounding his own ideal of scholarship.

Alwaleed Alsaggaf, or Renatus Arabs as he is perhaps better known in spoken Latin circles, is a fantastic example of how Latin fluency can be achieved in the modern world. Next Tuesday is the first of three talks this term as part of the UCL Living Latin Society's calendar. Renatus will be introducing us to De doctore Umbratico, in a talk delivered entirely in Latin, dealing with the themes of corruption of arts and human letters, and pedantry in scholarship - something many of us may have thought about in our own studies. There are few better ways to engage with Latin than to hear it in its spoken glory. Admission is free of charge and there will be time after the lecture to talk with the speaker about all things Latin (questions in Latin encouraged!).

We look forward to seeing you there and believe it will be a memorable evening of Latin!
