Historical documents from the Qing Dynasty testify that distrust of doctors is an enduring part of patient culture in China. Physicians have to negotiate with the family, who are very much in control of the selection of how and by whom patients are treated. Professor Cong will deliver a lecture and seminar illustrating some of the issues that arise in the Doctor-Patient relationship in contemporary China. Focusing on a 2013 study of decision-making involving cancer patients, family and physicians, she will ask:
What room is there for improving relations?
