Two PhD positions in Liquid Phase Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

26 January 2016

In collaboration with EPSRC, JEOL and DENSsolutions, We are setting up the Centre for Liquid Phase Electron Microscopy Imaging. This will be equipped with state-of-the-art electron microscopy facilities to image liquid samples with sub-nanometer spatial resolution and with temporal resolution of milliseconds.
We are looking for two enthusiastic students for the following projects:

4D Liquid phase Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

We are looking for a Physical Sciences or Engineering graduate to work on the development of novel 3D imaging modality of nanoparticle, macromolecules and biological structures in water. The project will include advance imaging analysis and modelling. A strong background in mathematics and calculus is expected. Experience with MatLab, Mathematica, LabView, Comsol Multiphysics, and similar packages is desirable as well as any previous experience in microscopy.

Live cells Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

We are looking for a Life sciences, Biophysics, Biochemistry or Bioengineering graduate to work on the development of novel 3D imaging modality of live cells using scanning transmission electron microscopy. The project will involve the preparation of novel probes as well as handling and culturing live cells. Experience with imaging analysis and any microscopy is desirable as well as any previous experience in advanced cell culture and cell biology.

Funding notes:

The two positions will be starting from October 2016. The scholarships will cover stipend and fees for both EU and UK students, overseas students will need to find extra funding/scholarships to cover the excess in fees. Candidates must hold (or will have obtained by Oct 2016) qualifications at the level of, or equivalent to, first or upper second class honours degree from a UK academic institution. Qualifications, or a combination of qualifications and experience, which constitute comparable ability and accomplishment will also be considered.

Application notes:

The two students will be joining the group of Prof Battaglia (www.battagliaresearchgroup.com) at UCL. This is a very interdisciplinary research group comprising several scientists and engineers from different backgrounds. The students will be joining the Department of Chemistry PhD training programme.
To apply please send your CV, two letters of recommendations, your degree transcript with grades (or expected grades), and 1 page research statement to Prof Giuseppe Battaglia, g.battaglia@ucl.ac.uk.
Deadline for applications is the 10th of April 2016, Interviews and selections will be taking place short after.
