FT-IR, UV and Wet Chemistry Facilities

Extensive laboratory facilities including fume chambers are available to carry out all types of wet chemistry practical work. These facilities include access to computer driven FT-IR (Shimadzu 8700), Range: 7800 - 350 cm-1, Resolution: up to 0.5 cm-1. UV (Shimadzu 2041PC), Range 1100 - 190 nm). A full range of spectroscopic sampling equipment is available for gas, liquid and solid analyses.

Mass Spectrometry Facility

UCL Chemistry Mass Spectrometry Facility provides nominal and accurate mass measurements using EI, CI and ESI ionisation techniques,  LC-MS of small molecules and protein/antibody analyses,  GC-MS analyses with EI and CI ionisation, peptide finger printing, LC-MS/MS and MSn, GC-Selective Ion Monitoring (SIM) scans and LC-SIMs.  Full details of Mass Spectrometry instruments and other related information can be found on our Mass Spec web site.

MAPS Workshop

A precision engineering manufacturing service in a wide variety of materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, ceramics and wood. Facilities: milling, turning, grinding, welding, plasma cutting, fitting and hand finishing.

Four Bruker NMR spectrometers with the following capabilities:

  • AMX300 with auto-switchable 1H/19F/13C/31P probe, sample changer, gradient facilities; Cost from £8 per spectrum or £50 per hour.
  • AMX400 triple channel system with two and three channel broadband 5mm probes; Cost from £8 per spectrum or £50 per hour.
  • AVANCE500 with two 5mm probes (direct and indirect 1H detection), sample changer, gradient facilities; Cost from £8 per spectrum or £50 per hour.
  • MSL300 for solid-state NMR studies with three CPMAS (2.5mm, 4mm and 7mm) and two wideline (broadband and 1H) probes; Cost from £15 per spectrum.

Examples of routine solution NMR experiments provided: 1H, 13C, 19F, 31P){1H} or 1H-coupled, DEPT, COSY(LR), NOESY, HMQC/HSQC, HMBC, diffusion rate measurements using DOSY, etc.

Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction

In February 2002 the department installed a new Bruker SMART APEX CCD diffractometer equipped with a variable temperature facility (90-300K). We are interested in developing new academic collaborations using the equipment and offer commercial users a 24 hr turn-round time on samples.

Powder X-ray Diffraction

A Siemens D5000 powder diffractometer permits the characterization of powders between 77 and 1100 K.
