Product and Process Systems Engineering

The overall aim of the Product and Process Systems Engineering (PPSE) group is to develop and extend competencies in
methodological developments in systems engineering and to demonstrate these by application to challenging problem domains. The primary objective is to develop computational methodologies and tools to assist the
process and related industries involving change at a molecular level to develop and to optimise system perfomance, and make better use of resources in a safe and sustainable manner. Our core competencies lie in modelling and model solution tools, process operations and control, product and process design and scientific computation. General methodologies are being developed based on advances in modelling tools, optimisation techniques, non-linear analysis, data analysis and visualisation.
Applications

The computational methodologies and tools have application in a
number of problem areas which, in the main, are relevant to the UCL grand challenges. These include, but are not limited to, chemical manufacturing systems, energy systems, bioprocess and bioproduct design, biological systems engineering and enterprise decision support systems. Specific applications include various separation processes
(distillation, membrane processes, chromatography, and adsorption),
biological processes (manufacturing, healthcare, and physiological
systems), supply chain design and management and sustainable development
(water resources management, renewable energy, and demand reduction).
Collaborations
The group is a partner is the Centre for Process Systems Engineering (CPSE) with Imperial College London and also has strong links with UCL's Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology (CoMPLEX) and with the UCL Energy Institute. Experimental validation also forms a key element of the research of the group, primarily through interactions with partners within UCL and outside, including international collaborators.
