The department was established in 1923 under the direction of E C Williams,
the first Professor of Chemical Engineering in the UK. The first course
in the Department led to a postgraduate diploma but an undergraduate degree
was started in 1937. A longer history of the department is available.
Situated within the UCL Bloomsbury
campus, the Department currently consists of 16 full-time academic
staff and 10 technical, administrative and support staff. The undergraduate
population is slightly in excess of 170 and there are around 30 graduate
students taking taught Masters courses and carrying out research.
We have strong collaborative links with
other university departments in the UK and abroad as well as with major
industrial companies. These links are continually being strengthened through
departmental involvement in EU programmes such as ALFA, Brite/Euram, and
Joule-Thermie. The Department is a partner in the Materials Chemistry Centre within UCL and also with Imperial College in
the Centre for Process Systems Engineering and in the London Centre for Nanotechnology.
