UCL Department of Chemical Engineering

The Women in Engineering Taster course, organised by the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, aims to introduce engineering as a career choice to  pre-A level school girls.  During the day the girls will have the opportunity to find out from recent engineering graduates what is like to study engineering, what do the courses entail and what career options will be available to them after graduations.  They will also have the opportunity  to visit the various engineering departments at UCL and carry out hands on activities in their experimental and computing facilities.

Together with the project partner Corning, this proposal aims to characterize interfacial transport processes and their physical driving mechanisms on the milli-scale in multiphase flow reactors (e.g. Corning AFR). This is accomplished by the experimental characterization of heat and mass transfer using non-invasive, laser-optical measurement techniques.

The IChemE 2013 medal winners for excellence in research, service and achievements were announced at the IChemE Annual General meeting held on 30 April 2013. We have received two medals in the department, details as follows:

Hydrogenation processes are of paramount importance in the chemical industry with a vast range of applications in the food, petrochemical and pharmaceutical sectors.

Dr. Paola Lettieri (UCL PI), Dr. Dan Brett and Dr. Lazaros Papageorgiou have won a $240k grant from QNRF for a project on "Carbon capture and storage for small scale gas fired combined heat and power schemes" which is a joint collaboration with GORD (Gulf Organization for Research & Development) and Hoare Lea, a consultancy company from Bristol.

Congratulations to Professor Asterios Gavriilidis (PI) and Dr. Simon Kuhn, who have won a collaborative consortium £991k grant, resulting from an EPSRC Sandpit, titled “Sustainable Manufacturing in Multiphase Continuous Reactors: Aerobic Oxidations”.

The EPSRC has awarded 5M£ toward the establishment of a Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering at UCL. The Centre will be directed by Prof. Marc-Olivier Coppens, Ramsay Memorial Professor and Head of Chemical Engineering at UCL.

Chemical Engineering student wins UCL Public Engagement Unit competition with 'SuperLeon' alter ego clean power pitch.

UCL Chemical Engineering has been awarded two out of the six best poster prizes in the ChemEngDayUK 2013:

Following the success of last year’s  Engineering League, set up by our own Ibrahim El-Habbal, Mario Johnson (2012-13 Ramsay Society Sports Secretary) extended this to a larger UCL-wide football tournament.

Dr. Paola Lettieri’s article in Waste Management is now listed as one of the most cited articles.

Dr. Eva Sorensen has been awarded the ExxonMobil Excellence in Teaching Award 2012, and named "ExxonMobil Teaching Fellow".

Paul Shearing was the first author of the most cited paper in Chemical Engineering Science in the period 2009-10 for the paper entitled: 3D reconstruction of SOFC anodes using a focused ion beam lift-out technique (Chem. Eng. Sci., 64(17) 3928-3933, 2009.)
