UCell – Powering Green Man festival with hydrogen

UCell are a team of PhD students, lecturers and industrial partners working on electricity production from hydrogen. Our aim is to demonstrate the real potential of alternative energies by providing fuel cell generated electricity to events, along with public engagement and demonstrations to inform and educate about fuel cells and energy technologies in general.

The Royal Academy of Engineering/The Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship awarded to Dr Lettieri

Dr Lettieri has been awarded a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering/The Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship to work on “A life cycle approach for nuclear waste management and plant decommissioning”. The Fellowship starts on 22 September 2014 and it is for one year.

Chemical Engineers have overtaken medics as the second-best paid graduates in the UK.
According to a survey by The Times, the average salary for a professionally-employed graduate six months after finishing their course is £28,992. This is more than 30% higher than the average starting salary for graduate positions across the UK.

Catalysis Kinetic Monte Carlo Package "Zacros" Released by Dr Stamatakis's Group

Predicting the performance of catalytic materials is a major challenge in the design of catalysts for bespoke applications. The kinetic Monte Carlo package "Zacros" just released by the Dr Michail Stamatakis's research group enables the accurate simulation of complex molecular mechanisms on catalytic surfaces. It can incorporate reaction rate and energetics data from ab initio calculations, making it a powerful first-principles framework for understanding catalytic phenomena. Chemical Engineering Cocktail Party 2013

This year’s chemical engineering cocktail party held for the second time by UCL’s Chemical Engineering Ramsay Society turned out to be quite literally an ice-breaking event. With a turnout of almost 350 people the night was the biggest one held so far by Ramsay Society and a huge success! With the majority of attendees from the chemical engineering department itself, this year’s cocktail party extended also to including the Biochemical Crooks Society, the Green Economy Society and even some people from different universities.
Dr Stamatakis recognized as a Top Reviewer of CACE

Dr Michail Stamatakis was recently named as a Top Reviewer for Computers & Chemical Engineering (CACE) in 2012-2013. CACE, published by Elsevier on a monthly basis, is a major Chemical Engineering journal covering, among others, the areas of Modelling, Numerical Analysis, Simulation and Process Systems Engineering. Dr Stamatakis has been an author and reviewer for the journal since 2011; his most recent paper on CACE presents hybrid models of cell population heterogeneity and appeared earlier this year. The journal Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Rafiqul Gani, and Publisher, Dr Angela Welch, appreciated Dr Stamatakis’s role as a reviewer with the following citation: “in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the quality of the journal”.
Engineers Without Borders’ successful trip to Kenya

The EWB Kenya team worked with Haki Water Kenya to install a chlorination system in an under privileged school in Kayole-Soweto slum in Nairobi Kenya. The chlorination system is to treat ground water pumped from a borehole on the school compound with was hitherto high in total bacteria and faecal coliform levels (well above WHO and Kenya government standards). Students who drank the water therefore fell ill frequently and absenteeism due to water borne illnesses was a big problem in the school, with a poor effect on student performance. By project commissioning, the treated borehole water had nearly 100% less bacteria and conformed to international standards. The team also ensured that the chlorination system allowed for residual chlorine levels for treatment of any further contamination in the piping system before final extraction and use at the various water points in the school.

£2.95M funding for UCL in Grid Scale Energy Storage

Dr Paola Lettieri attends award ceremony for the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering at Buckingham Palace

On 25th June 2013 Dr Paola Lettieri attended the awards ceremony for the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, held at Buckingham Palace. She was invited by the Royal Academy of Engineering as part of a selected panel of scientists, as a former Royal Academy Research Fellow. Dr Lettieri was the first woman engineer to be awarded a RAEng Research Fellowship in 2000.
Dr Simon Kuhn awarded the EPSRC First Grant (£99k) on "Process Intensification Using an Advanced Flow Reactor"

aims to characterize interfacial transport processes and their physical driving
mechanisms on the milli-scale in multiphase flow reactors (e.g. Corning AFR).
This is accomplished by the experimental characterization of heat and mass
transfer using non-invasive, laser-optical measurement techniques.
