Degree Classification
Pass, Distinction and Merit in the MA
All candidates must complete all parts of the examination, including the punctual submission of all written work required for assessment, in order to be considered for the award of the degree.
In order to qualify for a pass, a candidate will normally achieve an average mark of at least 50% across the entire examination and a mark of at least 50% on the dissertation.
In order to qualify for a distinction, a candidate should normally achieve a mark of at least 70% in the dissertation and an average mark of at least 70% across the examination as a whole.
In order to qualify for a merit, a candidate should normally achieve a mark of at least 65% in the dissertation and an average mark of at least 60% across the examination as a whole.
In the case of failed modules, up to 25% of the taught element (up to 30 credits on a taught pathway) in the mark range of 40 –49 may be condoned and an MA awarded. This decision is at the discretion of the Final Board of Examiners.
