Dissertation Preparation and the Dissertation Presentation Day

The presentation day is an occasion where all MA students will give a 15-minute presentation on their proposed dissertation topic, followed by questions (both from fellow students and members of staff). The presentation, as well as attendance throughout the day, is a compulsory element of the MA dissertation module and you must pass this oral element of the dissertation in order to proceed.

Presentations should:

  • Give a clear outline of the topic and of the research question
  • Introduce and explain the topic to those who are not necessarily experts in that field
  • State why this research question is significant
  • Outline the methodological approach
  • Preparing for the dissertation and the presentations.

Term II

You should start approaching potential supervisors with ideas for your dissertation as soon as possible. Forms with an agreed working title and the signature of your first supervisor (and second if the dissertation needs input from two supervisors) should be submitted to Patrizia Oliver by 25th February 2013.

Monday 1st April 2013

An abstract of your project, not exceeding 150 words, should be submitted (as an email attachment) to Patrizia Oliver. The abstract should outline the scope of the project, its aims and its research question.

 The presentation day for each MA will take place on 6 June 2013. The presentation day will follow a conference format, with students assigned to sessions. The timetable will be sent out after abstracts have been received.
