December 2010 The lab was visited by Johannes Müller (Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin).
December 2010 Marianne Pearson presented a poster on salamander phylogeny at the 12th Young Systematists' Forum (Natural History Museum, London).
December 2010 Jérémy Anquetin published a paper in Earth and Environmental Science Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh about Eileanchelys waldmani, a Middle Jurassic turtle from Skye, Scotland, UK.
November 2010 Marc Jones carried out field work in Namibia with Christy Anna Hipsley and Johannes Müller (Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin).
October 2010 Ryoko Matsumoto and Susan Evans published a paper on choristoderes and freshwater assemblages in the Journal of Iberian Geology.
October 2010 Paul Barrett and Marc Jones both presented talks at the 70th annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Palaeontology (SVP) held in Pittsburgh, USA.
October 2010 Upon invitation Paul Barrett and Marc Jones both presented talks at the Paläontologische Gesellschaft 2010 as part of symposium J: "Vertebrate diversity and evolution during the Early Mesozoic" organised by Adriana Lopez-Arbarello, Oliver Rauhut & Richard Butler, LMU München.
September 2010 Susan Evans, Marc Jones, Paul Barrett and Marianne attended the 58th Symposium of Vertebrate Palaeontology and Comparative Anatomy (SVPCA) hosted by University of Cambridge. Susan presented a talk on Triassic microvertebrates from Poland, Marc presented a talk on and cranial joints in reptiles, and Paul presented a talk on dinosaur material from Australia. Marc and Susan also presented posters on behalf of lab students Emma Humphries (Sphenodon jaw shape) and Katherine Belessiotis (frog skull shape)
September 2010 We are pleased to welcome Marianne Pearson to the lab who is starting a PhD with Susan Evans.
August 2010 Marc Jones and Susan Evans contributed to a paper led by Neil Curtis (University of Hull) investigating muscle force and sensory feedback using a sophisticated three dimensional computer model. Results indicate that periodontal ligament is not the only means of limiting bite force and protecting the teeth during forceful biting. This is pertinent to animals that lack periodontal ligament such as the tuatara (Sphenodon) but also humans that possess dental implants and have lost their ligament. This work is published in Journal of Biomechanics, was funded by the BBSRC, and benefited from observations and filming carried out at Chester Zoo. BBSRC press release: "What can a New Zealand reptile tell us about false teeth?". Media coverage included BBC humberside, ScienceDaily, and ReptileChannel.com.
August 2010 Marc Jones and Susan Evans contributed to a papers led by Neil Curtis (University of Hull) about predicting bite force in the tuatara (Sphenodon) using a three dimensional computer model. Results were compared to measurements taken from live animals kept by Dallas Zoo. The work was published in Journal of Biomechanics. This work was funded by the BBSRC and is part of a larger project investigating reptile skull mechanics
August 2010 Marc Jones ran a scientifc poster workshop with Richard Butler (Bayerische Staatssammlung für Paläontologie und Geologie) for ThinkWrite at the Bio Centre of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). This was part of the Amgen Scholars Program hosted by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, LMU (University of Munich) in partnership with the University of Cambridge and the Karolinska Institut (Stockholm).

July 2010 Marc Jones assisted with a ThinkWrite training course in Aschau (Germany) as part of the Amgen Scholars Program hosted by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, LMU (University of Munich) in partnership with the University of Cambridge and the Karolinska Institut (Stockholm).
July 2010 Marc Jones and Emma Humphries attended the 3rd International Palaeontological Congress (IPC3) hosted by Imperial College and the Natural History Museum (London) and presented a poster on geographic variation in Holocene Sphenodon jaws. Marc also presented a talk based on work carried out with Susan Evans in collaboration with Neil Curtis and other colleagues based at University of Hull and Hull-York Medical School funded by the BBSRC. Arnau Bolet Mercadal (Institut Català de Paleontologia) presented a poster at the meeting, coauthored by Susan Evans, about their work on lizard fossil material from the Eocene of Spain. June 2010 Susan Evans and Paul Barrett went to China (IVPP, Beijing and Guangxi Natural History Museum, Nanning) on a research visit funded by the Palaeontological Association.
June 2010 Neil Brocklehurst joined the lab funded by a Nuffield Undergraduate Science Bursary.
June 2010 Susan Evans presented a talk for the Biomedical Sciences department of University of Liverpool about skull shape and evolution in reptiles.
June 2010 Marc Jones attended the 7th Quaternary Vertebrates meeting (QuaVer) at the Natural History Museum, London. He presented a talk co-authored with and Emma Humphries on shape analysis of Sphenodon jaws from the Holocene of New Zealand (work funded by the Nuffield Foundation and Sylvester Bradley Award.
May 2010 Peter Holland visited the lab before giving an invited departmental seminar about the evolution of Homeobox genes.
May 2010 Susan Evans, Marc Jones, and Ryoko Matsumoto attended a LADEN meeting at Kings College London concerning ear development and evolution led by Abigail Tucker (Kings College London).
April 2010 The lab was visited by Steve Sweetman (University of Portsmouth).
March 2010 Paul Barrett appeared on BBC two's "Museum of Life".
March 2010 Paul Barrett contributed to a publication in Science the presents evidence of tyrannosauroids existing in the southern hemisphere during the Cretaceous. This work was carried out in collaboration with colleagues from University of Cambridge (UK), Museum Victoria (Australia), and Monash University (Australia).
February 2010 Marc Jones presented a talk regarding small fossil vertebrates at Swansea University hosted by the South Wales Geologists Association and Geological Society.
February 2010 Arnau Bolet Mercadal (Institut Català de Paleontologia) visits the lab to work with Susan on fossil lizard material from Spain.
January 2010 Paul Barrett provided a TV interview for Channel 4 following the discovery of pigment in dinosaur feathers by colleagus at Bristol University, University College Dublin, the Open University and an institute in China.
