Life and Health Sciences Careers Week

NEW FOR 2013

We have introduced a series of events to help students gain key insights into the wide range of careers available within the life and medical sciences, from medical doctor through to health consultancy and clinical trials. There will be three early evening panel discussions, each with a particular career sector focus where you can find out more about job roles, graduate skills & work experience requirements and recruitment methods. The three sessions are:

1. 'A Career as a Medical Doctor' Panel discussion Mon 28th October, 5:30 - 7 pm

2. 'Careers in Health Policy, Strategy & leadership' panel discussion followed by 'Careers in the health Sector' networking session. Tues 29th october, 5:30 - 7:30 pm

3. 'Life Science Industry Careers Forum' Thurs 31st October, 5:30 - 7 pm

1. A Career as a Medical Doctor. Monday 28th October. 5:30 – 7 pm.

Cruciform B304 - LT 1.

We have invited a panel of speakers who will provide you with an insight into what medical schools look for in applicants, what a medical degree is really like and what direction your career can take after medical school. Our first set of speakers will include an Admissions Tutor for The UCL Medical School, A medical specialist careers consultant from the British Medical Association and a GP Trainee & Clinical Academic Fellow. This will then be followed by a panel of current medical students who are happy to tell you how they got into medical school and what life is like for them.

Please note:

  • You do not have to book a place in advance for this event. Seats will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. To gain admittance, please bring your student ID card.
  • Please aim to arrive around 5:15 pm so that we can start promptly at 5:30 pm.

2. Careers in Health Panel Forum and Networking Evening. Tuesday 29th October. Cruciform B 404 - LT 2.

This event consists of two concurrent sessions. Please note that due to restrictions imposed by the size of the venues you will have to book to attend this event.

Careers in Health Policy, Strategy & Leadership Panel Forum. 5:30 - 6:40 pm

A panel discussion with external speakers working for a variety of diverse organisations involved the management of health services, raising awareness of health issues amongst government and the public, the strategic leadership of community health programmes and the provision of specialist health services, and research to inform policy makers. Our confirmed panellists are representing the following organisations and career pathways;

Informal Networking, 6:45 – 7:30 pm.

An opportunity to meet the panellists face to face as well as additional invited externals in a wider variety of health sector job roles & organisations including: IMS Health (Healthcare Consultancy) Genetic Counselor; Trainee Clinical Biochemist, A Health Public Affairs Officer, Public Health Specialist, Clinical Infection Scientist Trainee, Physician's Associate, Clinical Trials manager, Field Epidemiologist.

3. Life Science Industry Careers Forum, Thursday 31st October, 5:30 – 7 pm.

Cruciform B304 - LT 1.

Get the low down on the roles, skills, experience requirements and industry trends within commercial life science. This event takes the form of a panel of external speakers who will give a brief overview of what they do and their top tips for career success. We will then take questions from the student audience.
