Assessment Centres

Assessment centres consist of a set of activities over a day or half day, designed to see how you deal with work related situations. Popular activities include, group exercises, presentations and e-tray exercises. When you're preparing for an assessment centre, there is a lot of support available to help you...

We also have a range of specific resources available if you have been asked to complete Psychometric Tests or attend an Interview.

Careers Tagged is a digital careers library, providing links to a wide range of useful websites and other e-resources to help you prepare for assessment centre exercises.

Use general Search Tags such as "assessment centres" or more specific Tags such as "group exercises", "presentation skills" and "e-tray exercises" to get listings of relevant resources including:

  • A range of assessment centre helpsheets for UCL students / graduates
  • Guides on what to expect at an assessment centre
  • Tips on how to prepare for specific exercises, e.g. group exercises and presentations
  • Online discussion forums so you can hear from other students who've been to similar assessment centres

*This is a subscription-based resource. Current UCL students will need their UCL userid/password to log in. Recent graduates will need to log in to My UCL Careers and use the graduate userid/password provided on the home page.

Reference, loan and take away resources

We have a DVD called 'At the Assessment Centre', which follows candidates through a range of assessment centre exercises. This DVD can be watched at UCL Careers.

We stock a range of books on assessment centres, which will be useful in your preparation.

Click on a book cover to purchase your own copy online or visit our Information Library to use our reference copy or check availability of our loan copies. (Some books can be borrowed on a 1 week loan basis with a cash deposit).

Takeaway Guides / Helpsheets
Paper copies of The Ultimate Careers Guide, (which includes articles on assessment centres), and our range of downloadable help sheets, can be collected free of charge from our Information Library (subject to availability).

Interview Simulator

Many assessment centres will contain an interview component. This online tool provides access to a wide range of competency-based interview questions commonly used by graduate recruiters with tips, dos and don'ts for each question and advice from the interviewers themselves on how they would expect candidates to answer each question.

You can also create your own mock interview by picking relevant questions from the sample questions provided, record a video of yourself answering them against the clock and compare your answers against suggestions from the recruiter.

To access this tool you will either need to:
