If you're applying for a job, a course, a funding opportunity or anything else and want to know how to structure your application based on a particular recruiter's requirements, there is a lot of support available to help you...


Careers Tagged is a digital careers library, providing links to a wide range of useful websites and other e-resources to help guide you in writing your application forms and CVs. *

Use search tags like "CVs", "applications", "covering letters" and "personal statements' to get listings of resources including:

  • A range of help sheets and e-books on all types of CVs and applications published by The Careers Group
  • Advice from a range of sources on writing CVs and applications
  • Sector specific application information - add a sector keyword for this eg. applications + medicine.

*This is a subscription-based resource. Current UCL students will need their UCL userid/password to log in. Recent graduates will need to log in to My UCL Careers and use the graduate userid/password provided on the home page.

Careers Essentials Online

Our modular eLearning course is designed to allow you to engage with all aspects of graduate careers when it suits you.  Courses comprise information, video tutorials, interactive quizzes and exercises, action sets and key resources to help you move forward and take ownership of your future.

The Careers Service Guide, (which includes articles on CVs and applications), and our range of downloadable help sheets, (mentioned above), from The Careers Group can be collected free of charge from our Information Library (subject to availability).

We also stock a range of books as shown on the right to help you write effective CVs, covering letters and applications of all types.

Grammar guide

A guide to assist students with writing their applications and CVs. (Please note that our Applications Advisers will not proof-read applications or CVs for grammar or spelling errors).

We organise a wide range of events and workshops, many of which can be really useful to those at the career planning / exploring options stage...

Most events require advance booking so follow the links below for more information on:

  • Careers Essentials Programme (Autumn and Spring Terms): A series of Careers Consultant led talks aimed at all students and recent graduates which includes sessions on CVs and applications.
  • Employer Presentations (Autumn and Spring Terms): Talks by individual companies about their opportunities, which usually include tips on completing applications for their particular roles.
  • Sector Specific Recruitment Fairs (Autumn Term only): A chance to network with large numbers of major graduate recruiters from sectors popular with UCL students and ask informally about application procedures.
  • Skills4Work Workshops / Panel Talks (Autumn Term Only): A series of employer led events, some of which focus on CVs and applications. Get an employer's perspective on what makes a good application.
  • PhD and Researchers Workshops (All year  round): A series of talks and workshops aimed at PhD students and PostDoc Research Staff which include sessions on academic and non-academic applications and CVs.

CV and Applications Advice

If you already know what you're applying for and would like advice on a specific application before you send it off, our Applications Advisers can review your CV or application with an Application Advice appointment. This can cover applications for any type of job, internship, volunteering or further study/funding whether your application is in the form of a CV, covering letter, personal statement or answers to specific questions on a specialised form.

These are one to one appointments with an employer who has come to UCL Careers to coach students on writing CVs and applications. You don't need to be interested in working for that particular employer to benefit.

Through the Alumni Office, all UCL students and graduates have access to the  UCL Alumni Web Community.

Once logged in*, simply follow the "Careers Mentoring" link and you can then search for contact details of UCL Alumni by:

  • Year of graduation from UCL
  • Current occupation / field of work
  • The country they're now based in
