Graduate Appointments

What to expect from this appointment

Graduate Appointments are confidential one-to-one discussions with a Careers Consultant of up to 30 minutes. It is used as a general start point for many users where you can discuss a range of issues such as:

  • making decisions about life after UCL, e.g. choosing between work, further study or taking time out
  • exploring options related to your degree
  • planning your next steps to get where you want to be
  • how to gain skills or work experience linked to longer term career goals while at UCL
  • changing or leaving your course
  • how to market your degree, skills and/or experience to employers
  • how to improve any CVs or applications you're working on*
  • what to expect at interviews or assessment centres**
  • feedback on aptitude test results and more...

Following an initial appointment, you can check the availability of your Careers Consultant to book follow up 30 minute appointments with them whenever you want to.

*If you've written a CV or application for something specific and we don't have availability of appointments before your deadline, you can also book an "Applications Advice" appointment which are open to all current students and recent graduates and may have earlier availability.

**Graduate Appointments can be used to get an overview of typical interview procedures or to discuss any queries you might have about a forthcoming interview but, those wishing to practice their interview skills through a role play exercise should book a "Practice Interview".

Appointment Availability and Booking

All appointment slots are up to 30 minutes long and are available all year round, (unless stated otherwise*), at various times between 10am and 5pm Monday-Friday with additional evening appointments on Thursdays until 7pm.

Details of which Careers Consultant will be on duty on specific days will be shown on the booking system, (details below), when you check appointment availability. Please note though that this may be subject to change at short notice due to staff sickness.

Bookings can be made online up to 7 days in advance using your My UCL Careers account.

Once logged in, use the 'I want to... / Make Appointment' option and select 'UCL Graduate Appointment' from the list of options to check appointment availability.

If you would prefer to book further in advance or are unable to book online, you can also make bookings by phone or in person at UCL Careers, (see our Contact Details), up to 30 days in advance. You will need your UCL ID card when booking.

Multiple Bookings: Due to high demand, GradClub Members can only book one appointment at a time. If you do book multiple appointments, only the earliest appointment will be recognised and any bookings on subsequent dates will be automatically deleted.

Same day bookings: Please note, as appointment slots are pre-bookable in advance, they may not be available at short notice / for same day booking when demand is high.

However, appointments may be cancelled by others at short notice so it's worth checking availability regularly through your My UCL Careers account. Alternatively, graduates can make use of the shorter Applications Advice or Short Guidance appointments as relevant if these are available and your query is urgent.

*Please check our News Page for details of term dates, College closure days and details of changes to our normal service provision.

How to make the most of your Appointment

Advance Preparation

A little research on the queries you have can go a long way in making your one-to-one appointment more productive. We provide access to a wide range of information resources in our Help with… section which can help generate more focused questions for when you meet your Careers Consultant.

Our Location

Make sure you're familiar with where we are. Arriving late for your appointment can lead to a shorter or cancelled appointment as detailed below.

If you have any materials which you feel would aid your discussion with the Careers Consultant, we have printing facilities in our Information Library. Please aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment is due to start so you don't waste any of your appointment time printing documents.

What we don't / can't cover?

  • Our Careers Consultants can provide support and advice covering a range of issues and can help you explore options and make important decisions for yourself. However, careers guidance is an impartial process and a Careers Consultant will never tell you "what to do" or make decisions for you.

Skype / Phone Appointments

Skype Logo

Due to the nature and format of these 30 minute appointments, we strongly recommend that you attend in person where possible.

However, if you're not based in London or will find it difficult to come to UCL Careers for your appointment, the Careers Consultant can have a discussion with you over the phone or by Skype depending on your preference.

If you would like to set up a phone or Skype appointment, simply forward the confirmation email you receive when you book, (changing the subject line to "Phone or Skype appointment request" as appropriate), BEFORE 9.30am on the day that the appointment is due to take place and attach any documents that you feel would be relevant to the discussion so that these can be forwarded on to the Consultant on duty in advance.

Please also be aware that, due to the nature of our office layout, Careers Consultants doing phone appointments will be based in an open-plan office with colleagues nearby but Skype appointments take place in an individual interview room. Please think about the nature of your query when selecting the Skype or phone option.

You will then need to call our general enquiries number, (020 3549 5900), or contact us via Skype, (we'll send our Skype username when you book), at your appointment time to be put through to the Careers Consultant on duty.

If you are late or unable to attend

If you know you won't be able to make your appointment, you can cancel it up to 1 hour before through your My UCL Careers account so that it can be offered to another GradClub Member.

Late arrival

If you call in advance to tell us you're running late, we will hold the appointment for up to 15 minutes so that you can make use of the remaining appointment time on arrival. However, if you are more than 15 minutes late, your appointment will be cancelled so that later appointments are not affected and you will be asked to re-book for a later date.

Repeated missed appointments

If you book and miss 3 appointments, your My UCL Careers account will be suspended to ensure you don't book and waste any more. You will then need to book on the day in person at the UCL Careers office for any subsequent appointments this academic year.

Please note: Due to the nature of 1-1 advice, some appointments can last slightly longer than 30 minutes which means we cannot guarantee that you will always be seen exactly on time. However, you should still aim to arrive on time so that your appointment isn't cancelled.
