Employer Led Skills Panel Discussions / Workshops

What to expect...

All recruiters look for evidence of a range of skills that will make applicants effective in the workplace. In addition to the resources and 1-1 advice we provide on Developing Skills and Experience, based on recommendations from the AGR, (Association of Graduate Recruiters), UCL Careers Service has put together the Skills4Work Programme.

Run in partnership with UCL Union, this series of employer led workshops and panel discussions will help you understand what recruiters are looking for and how to develop and promote your skills more effectively.

Panel Format

Up to 5 graduate recruiters from a variety of sectors come together to talk about a particular skill. They will each give their views on what that particular skill means to them as a recruiter, how they look for evidence that applicants can demonstrate competency in that skill throughout the recruitment process and will also give tips on how to develop the skill through a variety of activities while at UCL. There will then be a chance for the audience to ask questions.

Workshop Format

These sessions are more interactive. 2-3 graduate recruiters will work together to run a workshop style exercise to help you practice using the skill in question.

Recruiters Involved

The Skills4Work programme focuses on skills which are common in any graduate job. You therefore do not need to be interested in applying to the companies who are involved with a particular panel or workshop as the focus will be the skill, not the sector they work in.

How to prepare...

The Help With... section of our website suggests a range of resources on the topics covered in the Skills4Work programme.

Using these in advance will help you get more out of the workshops.

After the Event / Unable to Attend?

Where relevant / possible, any materials relating to a particular workshop will be made available to download here.

The Help With... section of our website also suggests a range of resources on all of the topics covered in the Skills4Work programme if you haven't used them already.

Cancellations and Late Arrivals...

For all UCL Careers Events, please aim to arrive 5 minutes before the published start time.

If you arrive late and the event has already started, the facilitator reserves the right to refuse entry so that you don't disrupt the event for other attendees who arrived on time.

If you miss the event due to late arrival, you will also lose your deposit.

For those who have registered and paid the deposit, you can cancel up to one working day before the event is due to take place and receive a your deposit back in full. If you cancel with less notice, (for any reason), or simply don't turn up, you will lose the deposit.

The Autumn 2017 programme will be available from the end of Fresher's Week 2017.

Other Events

We offer a range of events to compliment this Skills4Work programme. We strongly recommend that you register with UCLAlert! now so that we can keep you informed about any other events that you might be interested in...

UCLU Programme:

UCLU also run a range of skills related events and workshops as part of the Skills4Work Programme. Please check Skills4Work.net for details of what they are running and when.

You MUST register your interest in advance and then pay a returnable £10 cash deposit in person at UCL Careers if you wish to attend any workshop or panel talk. This enables us to monitor attendance levels and ensure that they are more effective for those attending.

Places are allocated to those making the payment on a first come, first served basis and more students register interest online than there are places available so you will remain on a reserve list after registering until we receive your deposit. We therefore recommend early payment to avoid disappointment!

Registration is done through your "My UCL Careers" account. If you're using this for the first time, please read the My UCL Careers Instructions carefully before trying to log in.

You can register TWO weeks before a workshop is due to take place and bookings will close when it is fully booked or, at the latest, 1 working day before the event.

Can I attend if I haven't booked?

Generally NO! Workshops are popular and usually fully booked. If places are available on the day, they will be offered to those on the reserve list as above on a first come first served basis and then to those who haven't booked at all but we cannot guarantee entry.

Notification of future events

To ensure you find out when a workshop you're interested in is available for booking, we strongly recommend that you register with UCLAlert!
