Being independent of any specific research group, the services and instrumentation are open equally to all users and enable scientists to concentrate on the experiment and not on its logistics. Technological expertise and equipment is available in the Institute that research groups could not individually justify.

The group provides training in specialist techniques and equipment, especially to PhD students and new staff. As new technologies emerge the Institute can adopt them and provide a competitive edge. The economies of scale and competitiveness with external suppliers help to stretch research budgets.

The quality of service provision is monitored by a peer review group and regularly measured against external providers in terms of price, quality and delivery.

In 2007 we received a generous contribution of £2 million from the Wolfson Foundation to expand the current core facilities.
