The UCL Cancer Institute hosts external speakers, prominent in their fields of study, on Thursday evenings throughout the academic year.

The aims of these seminars are to discuss a range of topics relevant to cancer research, from fundamental research discoveries to translational applications, and we hope that these seminars will become a focus of social interaction between clinicians and scientists involved in cancer research across the UCL campus.

The general format is a 40-minute talk followed by a 10-minute discussion. A drinks reception will be held after each seminar.

Thursday 20th June at 5pm in the Courtyard Café, Paul O’Gorman Building

Dr Simon Cook  –  The Babraham Institute, Cambridge

Acquired resistance to targeted protein kinase inhibitors: causes, consequences & some solutions

Dr Simon Cook has a long standing interest in signal transduction cascades. The aim of his laboratory is to understand how selected pathways function in stress responses and stress resistance and how this impacts on cellular lifespan. In particular, his laboratory is interested in pathways that play central roles in coordinating cell division, cell survival and cell adaption (collectively cell longevity) in response to growth factors, stresses and nutritional cues. Therefore, his laboratory currently focuses on four evolutionary conserved signalling systems, namely the mTOR, MAPK, DYRK and NAD+ salvage pathways. Besides these basic research efforts, the Cook laboratory is also studying how human tumour cell lines with defined oncogenic driver mutations (e.g. mutations in KRAS or BRAF) adapt to inhibitors of the MAPK (ERK1/2) pathway. Studies of novel FGFR inhibitors are also ongoing in his laboratory. Dr Cook will present their recent progress in understanding these essential signalling networks on the basic biology level in addition to presenting outcomes of ongoing translational research projects.
