The UCL Cancer Institute hosts external speakers, prominent in their fields of study, on Thursday evenings throughout the academic year.
The aims of these seminars are to discuss a range of topics relevant to cancer research, from fundamental research discoveries to translational applications, and we hope that these seminars will become a focus of social interaction between clinicians and scientists involved in cancer research across the UCL campus.
The general format is a 40-minute talk followed by a 10-minute discussion. A drinks reception will be held after each seminar.
Thursday 16th May at 5pm in the Courtyard Café, Paul O’Gorman Building
Professor Victor Tybulewicz – MRC National Institute for Medical Research, London
“B cell survival and tonic signalling from the B cell antigen receptor“
Using gene knock-out technology and over a career spanning three decades, Dr. Tybulewicz has made a number of important contributions to our understanding of the function of various signal transduction proteins in the adaptive immune system. His group was also the first to generate a humanized mouse model of Down syndrome. His research interests are broadly divided into two areas.
Signal transduction from the antigen receptors of B and T cells
The Tybulewicz group is interested on signal transduction in B and T cells, from the antigen, chemokine and cytokine receptors, as well as integrins. Signals from these receptors play critical roles in B and T cell development, activation, migration, survival and death. His group is studying these processes, using a number of different techniques. These include gene targeting in ES cells and the generation of mutant mouse lines, protein biochemistry, imaging, RNAi screens, and structural biology. Over the last few years his group has focused on the following signaling proteins: the protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) Syk, the Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor (GEF) Vav1, and the small GTPases Rac1 and Rac2.
Mouse models of Down syndrome
Trisomy of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21) occurs in approx 1 in 750 live births, and the resulting gene dosage imbalance gives rise to Down syndrome (DS), the most common known genetic form of mental retardation. In collaboration with Prof. Elizabeth Fisher (Institute of Neurology, UCL) his group aims to identify dosage sensitive genes on Hsa21 which, when present in three copies, cause the many different phenotypes seen in DS. His group has created a novel mouse strain termed Tc1 which carries a freely segregating copy of Hsa21, and which shows defects in memory, synaptic plasticity, heart development, angiogenesis and in the craniofacial skeleton.
