Alumni Media and Communications UCL Connect Event: An Evening of Discovery and Networking

15 February 2018

The UCL alumni team welcomed over 100 alumni and students to the Institute of Education on 30 January to an expert industry panel event.  The theme of the evening was Media and Communications; how to get in and how to get on within this extremely competitive industry.

UCL Connect Speakers

It was exciting to see so many alumni enthralled by and getting valuable advice from an experienced and prestigious panel of UCL alumni.  Heading up the panel was Caroline Diehl (UCL PGCE, UCL MA) , Caroline is Chairman and Founder of Together TV, the UK Community Channel, and until March 2017 was Chief Executive, and Founder, of the Media Trust, the UK’s leading communications charity. Caroline’s experience across communication channels and genre’s was evident as she guided the evening through a series of topics including blogging, TV news and print journalism.

Caroline was joined on the Panel by, Asa Bennett, Brexit Commissioning Editor, The Telegraph (UCL Classics), Andrea Cheong, Social Media Coordinator and Style Blogger (UCL History of Art), and Gareth Furby, Film Maker and TV Reporter, BBC (UCL Economics).

It was fascinating to hear from Andrea about the world of blogging the way it has changed the way we influence and communicate and the new opportunities that this channel brings to the media world. The comparisons and contrasts between blogging and journalism and the power of facts and stories were highlighted by Gareth and Asa.

Throughout the evening it was clear that there is no one standard path to get into and become successful within the media and communications industries, hearing about how all the panellists have had to adapt and embrace new ideas and technology throughout their careers was very interesting.

Caroline Diehl said, “Making the effort and taking the time to network with other alumni is absolutely key”.  We couldn’t agree more!

Thank you to everyone who came, and thank you to our panellists for sharing your invaluable experience. There are more career development events planned for 2018 and we’d love you to get involved.
