Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education

This full-day workshop is intended for staff who have responsibility for running tutorials and other small group teaching sessions and/or lectures and large group teaching.
This session outlines different strategies and
techniques for engaging students in active learning, such as small group
work. We will consider how to design effective learning tasks that
focus on high-level learning outcomes (problem-solving, critical
thinking etc). Lesson-planning and questioning to enhance learning are also
included. Suggestions for approaches to enhance your teaching and
learning and enable your students to achieve higher order learning will
The workshop on large group teaching is hands-on and interactive, offering tips on how
to give an effective lecture. It is designed to help you make the best
use of your voice and body language so that you deliver lectures that
capture and hold the students' interest.
The session also covers how to prepare for a lecture and how to ensure that your audience leaves with a good grasp of content. You will be given the opportunity to practise and get feedback to help you overcome any nerves.
Participants can expect to come away with some useful ideas and guidelines for planning and conducting teaching sessions. The workshop is intended to be applicable to teaching concerns across a wide range of disciplines, so we will be dealing with generic aspects of teaching rather than focusing on discipline-specific issues. There are obvious limitations to what can be covered in a short workshop and participants will be also made aware of resources available for ongoing development of their teaching skills and expertise.
