It was formally established in 1842 for the academic study of languages and their history

It continues to be devoted to the scholarly study of languages

It led to renewed interest in the English language, and eventually the Oxford English Dictionary

Where in Bloomsbury

It originated in meetings held from 1830 at the University of London by those interested in the study of language

In 2008, the Society’s meetings were held at the School of Oriental and African Studies in Thornhaugh Street
