It was founded by F. J. Furnivall and Emily Hickey in 1881 to edit and promote the poetry of Robert Browning

It was dissolved in 1891, although members continued to meet informally for some time after this

It has no connection with the modern Browning Society, founded in 1969, www.browningsociety.org (opens in new window)
