Information for teachers
The foundation of our education and training programmes is laid in schools. Our main interaction with schools and their students is via Headstart courses, as well as visits by school parties and individuals.
The Department of Biochemical Engineering at UCL welcomes school party visitors throughout the year in order to explain the excitement of Biochemical Engineering. School students can also contact to arrange individual visits to the Department. Visits typically include a tour of the Department facilities and an introductory seminar on careers in Biochemical Engineering, courses available and the qualifications required to study Biochemical Engineering at UCL. For more information, contact us.
Biochemical Engineering at UCL is also represented at many schools and careers fairs around the country. If you would like details of a Career Fair near you, or if you would like us to attend your careers fair, contact us.
We produce two particular aids for teachers. The first is a bioreactor and a booklet which illustrate A level syllabus physics while demonstrating directly some of the challenges faced in the advanced bioindustries. Through the Gatsby-funded Biochemical Engineering Education Scheme we have been able to supply these bioreactors to a large number of schools. The second aid is a set of audiovisual material in CD and video (soon DVD) format, which are designed for use in AS level courses to illustrate the linkage of the science taught to the excitement of using it and the relationship to innovative new start-up companies which many students now join.
