Students who are being considered for a place are normally invited for interview. The interview provides an excellent opportunity to examine the departmental facilities before making a final decision. Offers are made without an interview when distance becomes a problem, especially for candidates who live overseas.

The undergraduate intake is limited to approximately 40 students each year. This ensures a high degree of personal contact and tutoring, both of which are seen as major strengths of the department.

In addition all students must possess GCSE/O-level in English Language and Foreign Language or an equivalent qualification. An overall IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the four sub-tests) or a TOEFL score of 580 together with a TWE of 4.0 (paper-based) or 235 plus an essay rating of 4 (computer-based) are acceptable equivalents.
