Pam Dhadda
Student: I am a final year student on the MEng Biochemical Engineering course. Company: Following the penultimate year of my degree, I spent a year in Industry at Avecia Biologics, Billingham, UK, a well reputed CMO.
Background: Based in the manufacturing support group (MSG), I concentrated on the development and optimisation of CIP procedures for all equipment used in the production of biopharmaceuticals in the commercial production facility.
The challenge: For the duration of my placement my goal was to lead an on-going cleaning documentation improvement project.
Issues that arose: The underlying principles of the project focused on GDP and its importance in the running of a GMP facility. Knowledge of both GMP and GDP were essential to ensure proposed documentation improvements were enforceable. The project required both initiative and strong team-working skills. The key to the project’s success was the ability to communicate with management and personnel across several plant departments.
Result: The year in industry enabled me to gain a
valuable insight into the engineering world, and gain skills
transferable to both my future working life, and present academic
studies.
I have become familiar with industry related procedures including, GMP,
GDP, CCRs, NCRs, Deviations and KPIs. I was also able to develop my
communication and interpersonal skills through delivering
presentations, and organising and coordinating meetings.
