Why do an industry placement or a summer studentship?
Getting work experience gives you
valuable knowledge and practical skills that put you a step ahead of other
students. This is true when applying for both permanent jobs and doctoral
By spending time in industry or in a research lab you will learn on the job, giving you the opportunity to develop practical skills at an occupational level. You will get a glimpse into your future work life, learn from industrialists and researchers and start building up a network in the bioprocessing sector.
What to expect?
- Summer Placement
You will work in a company during the summer break for 2 to 3 months. Summer placements are not part of the degree so you are free to choose.
The company should pay you for your work. There are as well funding opportunities from professional bodies (like the Royal Societies) and UCL Innovation and Enterprise.
You can also spend the summer working in the department. Get in touch with an academic you would like to work with to discuss projects. The UCL Faculty of Engineering is offering summer studentships. We will keep you up dated about funding options.
- Year in Industry (MEng Students Only)
As a MEng student you have the opportunity to spend your final year in a company. You will be able to gain a master level degree and get hands on experience at the same time. To be able to choose the Year in Industry as your fourth year option if you obtained 60% as average weighted mark in the first two years.
During the year you will work on projects relevant to (bio)processing, either research or engineering design projects. The projects should allow you to get experience in and learn about bioprocessing, how to conduct independent research and engineering design practice.
The Year in Industry will be covered by two modules (each 1.5 units); in addition you will come back during the year to UCL to take part in 4 MBI® courses and to moderate the 3rd year design project. Current studenst can find the details on Moodle.
Securing a placement position is highly competitive; we will give you extensive support to find an adequate position but we are not able to guarantee one.
Our Industry Contacts
We have well established industry contacts throughout the UK and abroad through research collaborations and our alumni network. These contacts range from large international pharmaceutical corporations, to specialist bioprocessing companies and small start-ups.
In the past students have taken up summer placements and Extra Mural Years in companies like GlaxoSmithKline, Astra Zeneca, UCB, Fujifilm Diosynth, Eli Lilly, Biopharm Services and Puridify.
