Aims

The course objective is to provide the students with the necessary insight of the fundamentals of fermentation and bioreactor engineering.  The material is delivered in a mixture of lectures and case studies.

The course links basic engineering material gained in the first year of study with courses on biological sciences. It provides the grounding for the 3rd year design project and advanced-level biochemical engineering courses.

Syllabus

A study of the principles of fermentation and bioreactor design and operation for the cellular production of biological materials. Topics include:

  • Cell growth and product kinetics
  • Bioreactor design and scale-up
  • Effect of shear on cells
  • Sterilisation of media and equipment
  • Monitoring and control of bioreactors
