UCL Biochemical Engineering receives share of £6.1 million to develop courses to teach the skills of the future

Over 30 universities and colleges in England have been awarded a share of £6.1 million by HEFCE to develop new and enhanced higher education courses. Working with employers, the projects will help provide the skills needed in the future economy and support the aims of the Industrial Strategy. UCL Biochemical Engineering has received £191,474 for a project titled “Enhancing productivity and supporting growth of the UK Advanced Therapies sector.”

UCL Biochemical Engineering Postdoctoral Researcher James Allen has been appointed to The Bioscience skills and careers postdoctoral researchers subgroup (BBSRC), a subgroup to The Bioscience Skills and Careers Strategy Advisory Panel (BSC) that focuses on postdoc careers and development. Bye Clynch Spassova Head Poster Competition 2018

The UCL Office of the Vice-Provost (Education and Student Affairs) competition for undergraduate research posters took place on Tuesday 30th January featuring several entries from Biochemical Engineering. We're very pleased to announce that a poster submitted by a team of our 2nd year students has been selected for presentation in parliament on the 20th of February. Their poster on the subject "Analysis of spent coffee grounds as a feasible feedstock to meet bioethanol production demands" won praise from the judges. Congratulations to Aoife Bye, Enya Gomes Clynch, Sofia Spassova and Douglas Head (left to right in photo) and good luck later this month!

Researchers at UCL Biochemical Engineering, led by Prof Nicolas Szita, together with Prof John Ward, and Prof Helen Hailes (UCL Chemistry), and in collaboration with researchers from the Instituto Superior Técnico, led by Prof Fernandes, present a microfluidic approach towards the automated and continuous synthesis of chiral amino alcohols from simple starting materials. The research was also part of an EU initial training network programme EuroMBR (European network for innovative microbioreactor applications in bioprocess development.
