Charnett and Max on The Engineering Cup 2017– BiochemEng Vs. ChemEng

9 May 2017

The first Engineering Cup took place on Thursday 4th May 2017. It was an afternoon of games, food and drinks jointly organised by the postgraduate societies of The Department of Biochemical Engineering (Beaker Society) and The Department of Chemical Engineering (CheERS).

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and especially to those who organised and supported the event. We took a few moments with Charnett and Max to talk about the games.

How do you feel now that it’s over?

Very happy! It was tiring, but we’re so pleased it didn’t rain, we’re not sure people would have been as enthusiastic otherwise! It was the first time we’ve done anything like this so a lot of work went into convincing people to take part, but now that everyone knows what the event entails we hope that next year people will be even more excited about it! We would really like ten teams to represent Biochemical Engineering next time.

How would you describe the event?

It’s an inter-departmental team building event that comprised teams from both The Department of Biochemical Engineering and The Department of Chemical Engineering here at UCL. Teams competing on behalf of each department took part in games that required different skills such as lateral thinking, teamwork and coordination, but with food and drink available the most important thing was to have fun! Interestingly people got more competitive after they’d had a couple of beers. It was great afterwards too when people from both departments went to the pub and got to know each other better, the games broke the ice, definitely.

Who’s idea was it?

The Beaker Society had come up with the idea of holding games from when we first got together, but Charnett has been working with the team in Chemical Engineering and got to know members of their postgrad society, CheERS. They proposed getting together to have a joint event and we proposed the idea of having a games event. I It really was something we came up with together.

We’d also really like to thank Lonza for sponsoring the event. They made it possible to provide the drinks, snacks and food and the very substantial cup – the amazing cup! In fact, Lonza were so into the event they intend to bring a team of their own next year! Also, we owe a huge debt of thanks to the team in Chemical Engineering. A lot of the work getting this done was down to CheERs, we’re very grateful to them and it was a totally collaborative enterprise.
