Arran Finlan Wins Best Poster Prize at ISAP 2017

3 July 2017

Arran writes "The ISAP (International Society for Applied Phycology, https://isap2017.sciencesconf.org/) conference in Nantes from the 18th-23rd June was all about microalgae and macroalgae. There were lots of presentations each day on the research being done in phycology. There were 4 main categories for the talks; biology, application, process and industry.

From our department there were a few who went, Dr Brenda Parker, Alex Cotton, Zhongdi Song, Greta Csalane Besenyei and myself. We all had posters there, mine was titled “Investigating the influence of the Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cell wall on downstream processing for recombinant protein production.”.

I did the project in the summer of 2016, it was based on a project being done by Dr Laura Stoffels from the Structural and Molecular Biology department and Dr Brenda Parker who were my supervisors. In brief, I used Ultra Scale Down (USD) technologies to mimic a pilot scale process, using a strain of algal cells with a cell wall and one without to see what effect the cell wall had on the processing and protein recovery."
