Education:
Licenciate in Chemistry, Universidade Nova de Lisboa
PhD Bioengineering, MIT-Portugal programme, Universidade Nova de Lisboa
Research Interests:
Bioprocess engineering of stem cells.
The differentiation of stem to adult tissue of clinical relevance is a goal pursued by many academic groups and industrial stakeholders. While the biology underlying stem cell differentiation is progressing and several clinical trials are already taking place worldwide, there is the need to establish economically viable and regulatory compliant stem cell bioprocesses.
Rui’s research is focused i) on the adaptation of adapt current stem cell differentiation protocols to the large scale production of functional adult cells and ii) the creation of Point of Care (POC) solutions which enable clinical staff to perform stem cell therapies in clinical settings without worrying about cell processing, viability or differentiation.
